Soh Jinhong, the Rosy-Cheeked Sword Fiend[]

Hwang Gyu and Jeonghak tries to recruit Sohjinhong

Recruiting Soh Jinhong

He and Yang Jeonghak arrived at Soh Jinhong's home, inviting the boy to the Baekma Valley but he rudely refused. Leaving him some food, they told Jinhong they would be back later. A few days later, they returned and Jeonghak asked if Jinhong had come to a decision. Jinhong asked if they even knew what he wanted and Jeonghak struck home with his words while also revealing a little of what he knew about Jinhong's mysterious steward. Jeonghak then told Jinhong that they wouldn't be back again and for him to come when he was ready. As they left, Jeonghak added that Jinhong should be careful reaching the Valley as a "monster" was searching for him and he was not a person he could handle.

Later, Hwang observed the fight between Soh Jinhong and Gang Ryong, alongside Yang Jeonghak, impressed at their skills. Listening to Jeonghak's critiques on the two of them, he watched as Gang eventually subdued Jinhong. Asking if they were just going to leave Jinhong there, Jeonghak replied that it would be his own fault if he got arrested or killed.

The Baekma Valley[]

Along with Yang Jeonghak, he went to retrieve Gha Woobok. Using underhanded tactics to coerce Woobok, the latter allowed himself to be taken back to the Valley.

Hwang Gyu shocked

Realizing that Gang Ryong is in the valley

The next day, after feeling what sounded like an earthquake, he went outside to see Gang Ryong had destructively entered the Valley. With the order given to stop the intrusion, Hwang Gyu went to Soh Jinhong and attempted to goad him into helping the defence, but the boy gave no response which annoyed Hwang. Visibly unnerved while looking at the incredible destruction down below, Hwang Gyu wondered why Gang Ryong was using such excessive force. Soon, when Hwang saw that Dang Gan, a Guardian of Baekma Valley, had come into the fray, he mused that it was all over for the disciple of the Heavenly Destroyer. As the two gosu fought below, Hwang Gyu rushed to find Jin Garyeong before confirming that it was the Heavenly Destroyer's disciple who was assailing the Baekma Valley. Just then, they all felt the after-shocks of a mighty collision of powerful techniques. Coming to the edge of the crater created by Gang and Dang Gan's attacks, Woobok humorously roughed him up for answers with Hwang Gyu asking Gha Woobok who he thought Gang had come to the Baekma Valley for.

Season 2 Intro[]

Meanwhile, on her way back from buying groceries, Yerin bumped into Jin Garyeong. With the two trading snide comments, and Garyeong claiming she had received a letter from Gang Ryong, Yerin ignored her and moved on her way. Hwang Gyu hopped down and asked if she was telling the truth, but Garyeong replied that it was a lie. She then revealed she had only just located Ryong which shocked Hwang Gyu.

Mak Sapyeong[]

In their plot against Mak Sapyeong, Hwang Gyu was one of the members who accompanied Jin Garyeong in a hooded disguise to the tavern-at-the-fork to convince Song Yerin and Song Chohyang to go into hiding. Due to a misunderstanding, Yerin resisted at first and easily subdued Hwang Gyu with her impressive ocular illusion abilities.

Later as the Baekma Valley clashed with Sapyeong, the residents of Yellow Dragon Mountain enjoy the time elsewhere inside a cavern while Hwang Gyu stood guard outside alongside a fellow member of the Baekma Valley. After cooking up a feast for the villagers, Yerin decided to go for a walk and his comrade stopped her citing that no one was allowed to leave the cave. However, still fearing her ocular abilities, Hwang Gyu allowed Yerin to leave.

Revived Heavenly Destruction Sect[]

With the incident involving Mak Sapyeong passing, Hwang Gyu gave Soh Jinhong a mission before divulging Intel on the Old Man's whereabouts.

Later when the Revived Heavenly Destruction Sect annihilated the Murim Alliance and their affiliates, Hwang Gyu hurried to the entrance of the Sage Forest to bring the news to Yang Jeonghak. Desperate to relay the news to their leader inside the Sage Forest, he suggested they enter but Jeonghak reminded him that it was protected by a barrier and entering meant death. Soon After, Jin Garyeong came out and received the news about the situation. After the Baekma Valley was attacked by the Revived Heavenly Destruction Sect, he was seen having a meal at Song Chohyang's tavern and later held Garyeong back as she argued with Gang Ryong.

After Gang Ryong killed Ze Wungang and defeated Nameless, Hwang Gyu led a squad of agents to observe the Revived Heavenly Destruction Sect members scouring the aftermath, and then relayed his findings to Jin Garyeong. Spurred by the death of Wungang and disappearance of Nameless, Hyeol Bi commanded the Pro-Heavenly Destruction Alliance to hunt down Gang and Hwang Gyu informed his boss of this news and then accompanied the Baekma Valley as they prepared to resist the Pro-Heavenly Destruction Alliance. The alliance eventually backed off due to the intervention by Hong Ye-Mong meanwhile Goo Hwi and Yongbi met with Hyeol Bi to propose that they have a duel between champions instead of an all-out war. Hwang Gyu was later seen casually defeating members of the Pungjin Sect in their test to see who would be the champions for their side in their upcoming battle.

At some point, Hwang Gyu spoke with Gha Woobok and revealed the events that have unfolded so far. He was then convinced by Woobok to lead him to the Sky Gorge Mountain where Dang Gan and the other Baekma Valley commanders set up camp to keep tabs on the battles.

Loose Ends[]

One year later, Hwang Gyu accompanied Jin Garyeong when she gave Doh Gyeom intel on the location of his uncle. After Gyeom refused help from them, Hwang Gyu watched the young man depart from the inn and voiced his opinions on him. Then in their ensuing conversation, he earned the ire of Garyeong with a misplaced joke, and was sent flying into the air by her.

Some time later, Hwang Gyu and Jin Garyeong camped near the island Doh Gyeom's uncle is on, revealing that they were the ones responsible for holding him there. He gave a report to his leader about the uncle's status and wondered why Gyeom wasn't making a move. After returning to their compound, Hwang Gyu relayed a report to his leader that Doh Gyeom was being trained by Sage Forest elders Heukweol and Yeonhwa, and then the two had a discussion about the couple. In the end, he angrily wondered why Gyeom is ignoring the uncle he wanted to find so badly.

Five years later, at the Baekma Valley, Hwang Gyu informed his leader Jin Garyeong that Soh Jinhong had returned to the Valley and intended to stay there. He then reported that a visitor had arrived.
